ℹ️ Web Development Contracts — Legal background

A web development contract should be precise about scope — "a website" is not a sufficient description. Scope creep is the biggest source of disputes. The contract should specify who owns the code (IP assignment), when payment is due relative to milestones, and what happens after launch.

  • Developer owns code by default — IP must be assigned in writing
  • Define scope precisely: number of pages, features, integrations
  • Staged payments tied to milestones protect both parties
  • Include an acceptance testing period (typically 14–30 days)
  • Post-launch support/maintenance should be a separate retainer
