An LPA allows a trusted person (your "attorney") to make decisions on your behalf. It must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be used.

• Must be registered with the OPG — takes several weeks (plan well ahead)
• Cannot be granted once mental capacity is lost — act early
• Two types: Property & Finance (P&F) and Health & Welfare (H&W)
• Each type requires a separate LPA document
• Certificate provider must certify you understand what you're signing
• Attorneys must act in your best interests under the Mental Capacity Act 2005
• You can restrict or give conditions on the attorney's powers
• OPG registration fee is currently £82 per LPA (reduced fees available)
