ℹ️ Model Release Forms — Legal background

Using someone's image commercially without consent can infringe their privacy rights under UK GDPR and common law. A model release is a consent form (also a contract with consideration) granting specific rights to use a person's image. For minors, a parent or guardian must sign.

  • UK GDPR: images of identifiable people are personal data
  • Commercial use of a person's image requires explicit consent
  • Consideration (payment or other benefit) makes the release contractual
  • Minors under 18: parent or legal guardian must sign
  • Revocation: consent can be withdrawn for GDPR purposes but contractual claims remain

Legal reference: UK GDPR Article 7; Human Rights Act 1998 (Article 8 privacy); contract law
